120 candles, free grilled cheese and a bakery that’s been feeding Portland since 1906

The smell of fresh bread and grilled cheese wafted through the streets Tuesday as Franz Bakery marked its 120th birthday with a community block party at its historic Northeast Portland facility.

The April 14 event invited the public inside the bakery for behind-the-scenes tours of one of Portland’s oldest and most recognizable food brands. Visitors got an up-close look at how the company’s signature buns move from raw ingredients to piping hot browning ovens and finally to neatly packaged loaves.
