Dad at Portland school pick-up claims self defense in shooting of fellow parent

Attorneys for the Portland man accused of shooting another father outside a Southwest Portland school at pick-up time two years ago said their client had been the target of “mocking language” and “very aggressive behavior” from the injured man.

Noureddine Dib, 43, faces charges including attempted murder and first-degree assault in the shooting of 49-year-old Michael Zakarneh just before 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 17, 2024.

The two had clashed on at least three prior occasions while maneuvering through the Islamic School of Portland’s cramped parking lot and side streets on a hill above Southwest Capitol Highway, but prosecutors said the verbal altercations never warranted the use of force…
