Raise property taxes to build a new fire station for the ‘Big One?’ Lake Oswego voters will decide

Lake Oswego voters this May will decide whether they’ll pay a new property tax to fund the rebuilding of the city’s oldest firehouse — the South Shore Fire Station — making it better suited to withstand earthquakes and safer for firefighters who work there.

Ballot Measure 3-635 would raise $20.6 million through general obligation bonds over 20 years by establishing a new property tax that would cost 19 cents per $1,000 of assessed home value. That’s $114 per year for the owner of a home currently assessed at $600,000, according to the measure’s explanatory statement.

The money would go toward replacing the 55-year-old South Shore station, which is at 1880 South Shore Boulevard and is the only fire station of four in the city that doesn’t meet seismic standards, said Assistant Fire Chief Kristine Artman…
