PORTLAND, Ore. — Monday marks 46 years since the catastrophic eruption of Mount St. Helens, one of the most destructive volcanic events in U.S. history.
On May 18, 1980, the Washington volcano erupted with tremendous force, killing 57 people and devastating roughly 210 square miles of wilderness in the Cascade Range.
