Historic Portland drag club plaque vandalized with homophobic hate speech

A plaque outside the iconic drag venue Darcelle XV Showcase that honored the club’s recognition in the National Register of Historic Places was vandalized last week.

Jeremy Corvus-Peck, owner of the club, posted Friday on Facebook about the “vile hate speech.”

The plaque commemorates the club’s original owner, Darcelle XV, also known as Walter Cole, who had an “instrumental impact in educating society through drag performance,” according to the plaque. Cole died in 2023 at the age of 92. Cole held the Guinness World Record as the world’s oldest performing drag queen and performed at the club a little over a week before his death.
