Amtrak reaches final testing phase for modernized trains coming to Pacific Northwest route

Editor’s note: While Amtrak said its new Airo trains could operate at up to 125 mph, the Oregon Department of Transportation told KOIN 6 the Pacific Northwest route only allows train service up to 79 mph.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A national railroad service has reached a pivotal phase of testing the modernized trains that passengers throughout the Pacific Northwest, including in Portland, will begin riding later this year.

Earlier this week, the first trainset of Amtrak’s new Airo fleet arrived in Seattle for its final stage of testing before it joins the Cascades route.
