Massachusetts man gets 8 years for murder-for-hire plot

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Massachusetts man was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison for his role in a murder-for-hire conspiracy that targeted a federal witness, two rival gang members and two federal prosecutors.

Kareem Pires, 27, of Wareham, was sentenced to 96 months by U.S. District Chief Judge John McConnell at federal court in Providence. The sentence fell short of the 151 months prosecutors had sought, but was higher than the 78 months Pires’ attorneys argued was warranted.

Pires pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to tamper with a witness by killing or attempting to kill. As part of the deal, prosecutors dismissed a separate murder-for-hire conspiracy charge and agreed not to pursue Massachusetts drug trafficking charges that carried a 10-year mandatory minimum…
