PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Cameras appearing across Rhode Island have raised questions about surveillance, but officials clarified those placed along the state’s bike paths are designed to count people using the paths, not identify them.
According to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, cameras have been set up at 36 locations to collect data on cyclists and pedestrians using bike paths and lanes.
RIDOT spokesperson Charles St. Martin told 12 News the department conducts four counts each year, typically over a five-day period that includes a weekend.
