PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence City Council gave its first approval of a controversial rent control ordinance Thursday night in a 9-6 vote.
The ordinance must be approved a second time by simple majority before being sent to Providence Mayor Brett Smiley’s desk, who plans to veto it. If that happens, the council will have 30 days to override the veto with a two-thirds majority, or 10 votes.
