Cranston mayor seeks tax hike beyond state cap in $353M budget

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins will seek General Assembly approval to increase the city’s annual tax levy by 7.4% in an attempt to address a multimillion-dollar deficit.

The mayor outlined the proposed tax hike in his fiscal 2027 budget plan unveiled Wednesday to the Cranston City Council.

The second-term Republican, who took office in 2021, has proposed increasing the size of the budget 4.3% to $352.7 million for the fiscal year beginning July 1, according to a copy of the plan released online…
