Smithfield to install emergency boxes at Georgiaville Pond to prevent future tragedies

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — Members of the Smithfield community gathered at Georgiaville Pond on Saturday to honor a local woman who devoted her life to preventing further tragedies there.

Those who knew Elaine Taylor have shared that she worked tirelessly to spread awareness about the dangers of swimming out to the pond’s island which is just a few hundred feet from the shore. Since the 1800s, 20 people have died in Georgiaville Pond’s waters.

Elaine died on April 5 at the age of 70. Her husband Patrick Taylor told 12 News that his wife’s last wish was for an emergency call box to be installed at the pond…
