Residents split over East Providence use of flock cameras to make arrests

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — Police in East Providence say license plate reader cameras helped officers solve multiple crimes in a matter of minutes last week. But the technology is also sparking debate, with residents split over privacy concerns.

In a Facebook post Monday, the East Providence Police Department said three separate incidents on April 17 led to multiple arrests with the help of Flock Safety cameras.

According to police, officers received a camera alert around 4:23 p.m. for a vehicle connected to an armed robbery in Providence. The suspect was later taken into custody without incident…
