‘Stolen valor’ fraudster denied early prison release in RI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A federal judge has denied a request for early release from a Rhode Island woman who pleaded guilty to stealing the identity of a Marine with cancer.

Sarah Jane Cavanaugh, 35, had asked for compassionate release from prison, alleging she had been sexually assaulted while serving time at a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. She also claimed she had been harassed and abused at a halfway house in Pawtucket.

Federal prosecutors argued Cavanaugh’s claims lacked credible evidence and “do not rise to the level of ‘extraordinary and compelling’ circumstances justifying her release.”…
