PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — It’s been more than a year since the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced residents could take roadkill home with them.
The DEM began allowing the public to collect eligible wildlife species killed by vehicles back in April 2025.
Since then, data shared with 12 News reveals that the DEM has issued 147 salvage permits for nine different species:
