The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a disaster declaration for Long Island’s shellfish industry following a winter marked by prolonged freezing temperatures.
According to a survey conducted with industry partners, oyster farmers are facing production losses exceeding 30%. In addition, critical infrastructure – including racks, lines, and vessels – sustained significant damage, with repair and replacement costs estimated at $2.4 million.
