New York Blood Center declares blood emergency

The New York Blood Center says its supply has reached critically low levels, forcing it to declare a blood emergency.

According to officials, there were 4,500 fewer donations than are needed to meet hospital demand during the summer, which is when hospitals typically see a rise in serious injuries.
