AI and facial recognition help find 37 missing children in NY area

GARDEN CITY, LONG ISLAND (PIX11) — Facial recognition technology and artificial intelligence are being credited with helping to find thirty-seven children and teenagers who were reported missing on Long Island and in New York City.

The National Child Protection Task Force put together a three-day gathering of law enforcement agencies and organizations in Garden City. The investigators compared leads and used companies like Clearview AI to run photos of the missing against thousands of images that were publicly available online.

Kevin Branzetti, the CEO of NCPTF, told PIX 11 News, “There are companies that scrape sex ads, so the A-I will run the photo through sex ads that have been collected. We have the ability for what the company has stored and collected to run it through their data, their collection.”

Branzetti said sometimes the technology finds “something they posted three weeks beforehand but it is on an account no one knew about, and so now that we have the new account, that leads us a whole different, who are they talking to, what’s in the background of those photos.”…
