Supporters of a proposal to shorten North Carolina’s divorce waiting period gathered in Cary Thursday night, sharing personal stories they say highlight the need to change one of the state’s longstanding divorce requirements.
Senate Bill 626, drafted by state Sen. Woodson Bradley, would reduce the required separation period before a divorce from one year to six months. In cases where there are no minor children and divorce is uncontested, the waiting period would be eliminated. The bill would also waive the separation requirement for domestic violence survivors.
