Person in custody after driving across lawn of North Carolina Capitol grounds in stolen SUV, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A driver was arrested after police said he drove a stolen SUV across the grounds of the North Carolina State Capitol in Raleigh on Thursday afternoon.

Police said this occurred just before 3 p.m. on Capitol grounds. CBS 17 obtained scanner traffic of the incident.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, an SUV from York Security was left running and unattended on the 3800 block of Lake Boone Trail, before a suspect jumped in the vehicle and took off.

“He’s cutting across the grass and just cut across the Capitol grounds,” according to scanner traffic.

Capitol Police saw the SUV heading in the wrong direction near the State Capitol grounds. Officers were unaware the SUV was stolen at the time, police said. After trying the stop the security vehicle, the driver went off the road and onto the lawn of the Capitol grounds. Officers then chased the vehicle for a short time.

“He was driving the wrong way down the street and cut across the Capitol grounds on the grass,” according to scanner traffic.
