NCSU students add sensors, weather station to whirligigs

N.C. State University electrical and computer engineering students are adding a second set of sensors to measure rotation, tilt and vibration on three whirligigs at Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park.

Additionally, the team of four college seniors installed a real time weather station that can be compared to data gathered by sensors to enable more precise diagnosis of the whirligigs named BBB Blue Star, Barbecue and Angle Star.

The team has plans to use the same technology to gather data from a Simpson-built whirligig called Crossroads that’s currently on display adjacent to the Gregg Museum of Art and Design on the university campus…
