ABSS, Thomasville City Schools make Friday optional teacher work day with rally planned in Raleigh

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Thomasville City Schools and Alamance-Burlington School System students will have the day off May 1 after both districts approved optional teacher workdays ahead of a statewide rally in Raleigh focused on teacher pay and public school funding.

The Alamance-Burlington Board of Education cited staffing concerns as a key factor in its decision. The district said it is facing nearly 500 staff absences and more than 250 unfilled substitute positions for the day, leaving it unable to provide adequate supervision or reliable transportation. Because of the number of instructional hours already built into the district calendar, students will not need to make up the day.

Thomasville City Schools’ Board of Education also voted to make May 1 an optional teacher workday, joining several other Triad districts making schedule adjustments. Guilford County Schools and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools have approved similar changes…
