Red Rock couple had just moved into their “forever home,” then the Bug Fire burned it

Along a winding walkway among rolling desert hills, a pale yellow house once stood. Now, the dirt has scorched, blackened patches from the sagebrush that went up in flames, and the home where longtime Reno resident Michele Lucero lived with her husband was reduced to rubble. As Lucero described the scene, the wind kicked up dust and the smell of burnt chemicals.

“Literally, it looks like a bomb went off. There is absolutely nothing to salvage. There’s not any little trinket or anything. There’s not one wall standing,” Lucero said.

Two Saturdays ago, Lucero was hosting a full house of friends and family from out of town. She had been getting alerts, but when the power went out, she wasn’t thinking about her stuff…
