RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Washoe County is answering frequently asked questions about the recovery process after the Hawk Fire.
They say affected residents should take these steps, in order:
- Do not begin debris removal until household hazardous waste removal is complete. (See “How will debris removal be sequenced” section.)
- Photograph damage to buildings, utilities, vehicles, and personal property.
- Contact your insurance company and ask about debris coverage, temporary housing, required inspections, and documentation.
- If your property was damaged or destroyed and Washoe County has not contacted you, call Washoe 311 by dialing 3-1-1 on your phone.
- Keep all photographs, estimates, contracts, permits, invoices, disposal receipts, and lodging receipts.
- Before hiring anyone, verify the contractor has an active Nevada contractor’s license.
- Before removing any debris or ash, ensure a demolition permit has been issued (either Washoe County or City of Reno, depending on the property location)
They say residents entering or cleaning their property should not disturb hazardous materials and be on the lookout for unstable structures, damaged utilities, compromised fuel tanks, asbestos and other hazards.
Residents should wear a properly fitted N95, gloves, protective footwear and long sleeves and pants if entering a damaged or destroyed structure.
How will debris removal be sequenced?
Cleanup will be sequenced in three phases. Phase 1 will involve removal of batteries, propane tanks, paints and other hazards. Phase 2 will involve the removal of ash, structural debris, and remaining fire related material. Phase 3 will involve the approval of designs, permits, construction and inspections as part of the process of rebuilding affected structures.
What should I do with destroyed vehicles?
Damaged vehicles will be included in the scope of Phase 1. The owner of the car is asked to contact their vehicle and/or property insurance carrier to arrange assessment and disposal.
Who pays for debris removal?
Washoe County will pay for Phase 1, but property owners will be responsible for paying for Phase 2. Property owners should coordinate coverage and financing with their insurer or lender for Phase 3.
Can I hire my own debris removal contractor?
Yes, for owner managed work after Phase 1 is complete and the required permits and environmental steps have been addressed…
