RENO, Nev. — As questions about campus safety and how universities respond to reports of sexual assault and harassment continue to make national headlines, federal data shows the issue extends far beyond any one campus.
Colleges and universities across the country reported more than 23,000 criminal incidents on campus in 2021, including more than 10,000 reported forcible sex offenses, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Forcible sex offenses accounted for about 44% of all reported on-campus crimes that year, with the reported rate increasing from 2.2 per 10,000 students in 2011 to 7.5 per 10,000 in 2021.
