Central Virginia’s Pawpaw Festival celebrates the largest edible native fruit in the US

Pawpaws are the largest native edible fruit

Baby Boomers may recall hearing the Pawpaw song as children, but perhaps not everyone knew there was a real food with this name. Pawpaws are the largest edible fruit native to the US.

In 2023, Central Virginia held the first annual PawPaw Festival to celebrate this native food. The event’s success led to another celebration in 2024, part of Virginia State Parks’ welcoming of the Fall season.

The second annual Pawpaw Festival will be held at Powhatan State Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. Local vendors will offer food and brews and unique crafts, live music performances, animal encounters, and ranger-led programs.
