RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A routine cleanup event at the Westhampton Lake is helping keep local waterways clean while bringing the community together.
The University of Richmond hosted its third cleanup day of the semester at Westhampton Lake on Friday. The event typically draws 30 to 40 students and community volunteers who work to collect trash, clean the lake and its shores and help maintain healthy biodiversity.
Sustainability director Rob Andrejewski said the lake plays a vital role at the university, serving both recreational and academic purposes. He said students conduct research on fish and turtle populations at Westhampton Lake, while community members often fish or walk along the shoreline.
