Assemblymember Dawn Addis on California Offshore Oil Platform Fire, Says, “Expanding Offshore Drilling While Relying On Aging Infrastructure Poses Serious Threats To Our Coast, Marine Environment, And Communities”

May 12, 2026 – SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay), released a statement following reports of a fire aboard an offshore oil platform off the Southern California coast:

“Today’s offshore platform fire in Southern California reminds us that expanding offshore drilling while relying on aging infrastructure poses serious threats to our coast, marine environment, and communities. As the Federal Administration abuses its authority to expand offshore oil production, we cannot lose sight of the very real danger that these operations can pose. That is why I introduced AB 1536 to strengthen protections for our coast and ensure California communities have a voice in safeguarding the places we call home and prevent future incidents.”
