ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) — For this week’s Amazing America 250, ABC13 heads to Mill Mountain and shares the history of the Roanoke Star.

Nelson Harris is a historian and former mayor of Roanoke. He said in Roanoke, it’s affectionately called the Star City; the reason for that is this neon sign.
“The Roanoke Merchants Association and the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce were trying to think in the late 40s how to promote shopping in Roanoke for the Christmas season. They had tried various things to draw folks to Roanoke from outlying areas. And so long story short, they settled upon a neon star on top of Mill Mountain,” Harris said…
