Roanoke email compromise led to data breach notification

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)- A City of Roanoke email account was apparently compromised by a phishing scam back in May.

According to the press release, the incident happened on May 6 with a phishing email that “appeared legitimate” to a city employee.

The email account was locked the following day. City officials contacted its insurance company to launch a cybersecurity investigation. The insurance company determined the phishing software looked at the employee’s email contacts in an attempt to harvest login credentials…
