ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and promote mental health support. In the U.S., CDC data show the suicide rate among men is significantly higher than it is for women.
In 2024, suicide was responsible for nearly 49,000 deaths, and the rate among males was nearly four times higher than females, according to the report.
“They tend to wait until things are at a breaking point or a crisis point,” said David Alperovitz, a clinical psychologist at McLean Hospital.
Warning signs
Alperovitz said men account for nearly 80% of all suicide deaths. About 60% of those men were not getting help because they had no documented mental health history, he said…
