Giles County man arrested for allegedly importing psychedelics, selling on VT’s campus

ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) — A Giles County man has been arrested after allegedly importing psychedelics from Brazil into Virginia and selling them on the campus of Virginia Tech.

28-year-old Charles Herman Aardema III, of Ripplemead, was arrested on charges of attempting to possess with intent to distribute dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and distributing lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), according to a federal criminal complaint.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Virginia, customs and border protection officers at the Miami international mail facility examined a package based on suspicious X-ray findings back in September of 2021. Inside, they found several plastic bags containing more than 11 kilograms of reddish powder, which chemical analysis determined to contain DMT. The package was addressed to Aardema’s home in Ripplemead and shipped by a “Raul Wictor Silva Batista” of Brazil…
