Virginia Tech students react to Canvas Cyberattack after some final exams rescheduled to Mother’s Day

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – A cyberattack is disrupting thousands of schools as students cram for finals. Hackers knocked out a system called Canvas. Students use it to check grades and access class materials. Thursday, when students logged on, they got a ransom note message threatening to leak data if they aren’t paid by May 12. It’s used by nearly 9 thousand schools around the world from major universities to K-through-12 systems. The attack caused Virginia Tech to reschedule Friday’s final exams to Sunday, which is also Mother’s Day. Now, Canvas is back online, but some students said it’s all been a major inconvenience.

“It’s just awful, because some people go to church or had these plans with their moms or had these travel accommodations, and now they can’t go, and they have to miss out,” said freshman, Sofie McCormick.

Canvas is now back online for students and faculty at Virginia Tech but that doesn’t change the rescheduling for some exams. McCormick had plans for an in-person exam Friday, but because she’s moving out of her dorm, she’ll be taking her exam online Sunday…
