The Secular Society erases $51M in medical debt for 35,000 Southwest Virginians

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WCYB) — The Secular Society, a non-profit located in Blacksburg, is eliminating $51,348,305 in medical debt for 35,007 residents in Southwest Virginia. According to the group’s spokesperson, Rachel Helton, letters are being mailed out to residents and should arrive within the next 2-4 weeks.

According to the Secular Society, to be eligible, the debt must be held by someone with a family income less than four times the federal poverty level, or by someone for whom medical debt is 5% or more of their annual income.
