Spencerport carnival aims to support volunteer firefighters amid statewide shortage

SPENCERPORT, N.Y. — Thursday marks day two of the Spencerport Fireman’s Carnival, a fundraiser for the entirely volunteer-based fire department. The carnival comes amid a shortage of volunteer firefighters, which recently hit a 40-year low statewide.

The money from the carnival goes toward recruitment and buying life-saving new equipment, said Aaron Baker, president of the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association. Finances were tough during the pandemic, when there was no carnival. Since then, the carnival has returned in full swing every year.

“What we wanted people to know is this helps our operating costs for our Fireman’s Association. This supports the members, 100% volunteer, here in Spencerport,” he said…
