New York diner named among best in America. Plus, popular diners in Rochester to check out

A Hudson Valley diner has been recognized among the top diners in the nation. The LoveFood blog last month listed the best diners from each state, and included a slice of Americana from New York’s Hudson Valley – Dan’s Diner.

The structure was initially the 1925 Jerry O’Mahoney Diner and was was salvaged as scrap in the 1980s. Over the next decade, it was restored by owner Dan Rundell, who in 1993 opened the vintage roadside spot on Route 203 in Spencertown, Columbia County, as Dan’s Diner.

The eatery is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving traditional diner fare, including burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast options (eggs, pancakes, omelets and more) that are served all day, according to the diner’s Facebook page. The diner seats 20.

A second diner was also featured on the blog for New York – Ellen’s Stardust Diner in New York City. The 1950s-themed eatery with singing waiters and is located on Broadway in Manhattan’s Theater District. Ellen’s Stardust Diner opened in 1987, is open daily from 7 a.m. to midnight.
