Rockford’s WIFR, WREX experiment with simulcast as merger continues

ROCKFORD, IL — As the Rockford news media landscape shifts and contracts, leaders of 23-WIFR say they are striving to maintain a pair of TV news operations under one roof.

What the end product will look like remains unclear. WIFR parent company Gray Media closed May 1 on the acquisition of 10 television stations owned by Allen Media Group including longtime Rockford rival 13-WREX as part of a $171 million deal.

General Manager Tim Myers said staff of both WREX, an NBC affiliate, and WIFR, a CBS affiliate, have since then been working together to coordinate news coverage, align priorities and reduce duplication on major stories. The hope is to expand coverage depth and consistency…
