ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Two living history events return to Midway Village Museum, 6799 Guilford Rd., giving students and families chances to learn more about Rockford’s contributions during the Civil War.
On Wednesday, the first day of a three-day event, Midway Village staff members taught students about Camp Fuller, which served as the training base for Rockford from August to November 1862. The camp was located in what became the Churchill’s Grove neighborhood, which is bounded by what now is the Rock River, Auburn Street, Post Avenue, North Main Street and Guard Street. Before closing by January 1863, Camp Fuller trained four regiments: the 74th, 92nd, 93rd and 95th Illinois.
“We have stations that talk about we have some homelife we have some games people would’ve played in that era as well as vintage cannons and firearms that are displayed. We have a drumming session where kids get to play drums that’s a replica and we train them how to play it’s really a great interactive experience for children to learn,” said Patrick O’Keefe, Midway Village Museum executive director…
