Rockford Food Bank Hosting Emergency Food Pickup This Weekend

Nearly 120,000 Illinois residents are at risk of losing SNAP benefits now that new changes to the program are in effect, and it’s food banks are stepping up throughout the state to help get food to families in need.

SNAP Benefit Changes in Illinois

On May 1, 2026, major changes to SNAP benefits officially went into effect throughout the United States, and thousands of Illinois residents have lost, or are at risk of losing food assistance.

The biggest change to SNAP program involves new work requirements for what the government calls “Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents” (ABAWDs) between the ages of 18 and 64. Under the new rules, recipients must work, volunteer, or participate in approved job training or education programs for at least 80 hours each month to continue receiving benefits.

Technically, these changes started on February 1, but May 1 was the official deadline to comply, and when benefit reductions and cutoffs truly began.
