For a restaurant that once had customers filling its tables and a community rallying behind it, the final decision was one no owner wants to make. Casa East Sac, a neighborhood restaurant on H Street, has permanently closed after its owners said declining customer traffic and the financial pressures of running a full-service restaurant became too difficult to survive.
The closure marks the end of a business that opened with strong momentum in 2022 and quickly became part of the East Sacramento dining scene. Co-owner Steve Gibanov said the restaurant fought to stay open, receiving support from customers, employees, and even its landlords, but the numbers eventually became impossible to manage.

When Casa East Sac opened in 2022, the future looked promising for brothers Steve and Theodore Gibanov. Steve described the early months as extremely successful, saying the restaurant was so busy that the team struggled to handle the number of customers coming through the doors. The strong beginning gave the owners confidence that they had built something with long-term potential.
Over time, however, the restaurant faced a major shift as customer traffic declined. Gibanov said the biggest challenge was maintaining a full-service operation with employees working even when fewer customers were coming in. He explained that continuing to cover labor and operating costs without enough revenue eventually became too much pressure for the business to carry.
Empty tables became one of the biggest challenges behind the closure.
For customers, a restaurant may appear to be open and operating normally, but behind the scenes, owners face constant expenses that continue whether tables are full or empty. Casa East Sac had to manage costs such as wages, food supplies, rent, utilities, and other daily expenses while dealing with fewer customers.
