Wrong-Way Garden Highway Chase Ends With K-9 Takedown Of Grand Theft Suspect

A grand-theft suspect wanted by Elk Grove police was arrested Monday evening after a brief but tense pursuit that included a wrong-way stretch on a Garden Highway on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies tracked the SUV from the air, and the chase ended near the Garden Highway and I-5 interchange, where a sheriff’s K-9 bit and detained the driver. Deputies say they had first located the vehicle near Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road before the pursuit. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or said whether anyone was injured.

How the pursuit unfolded

The sheriff’s office says deputies initially spotted the suspect’s vehicle near Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road at about 6 p.m. and tried to pull it over. When the driver allegedly began traveling against traffic, the ground pursuit was called off for safety reasons, but a sheriff’s helicopter kept an eye on the SUV from above.

A viewer later shared dash-cam video with KCRA 3 that shows the SUV driving the wrong way on the Garden Highway on-ramp to I-5. According to the sheriff’s office, the chase effectively wrapped up when the vehicle stopped near the highway and a K-9 moved in, biting and detaining the suspect. Elk Grove police, which had the original grand-theft warrant, will handle the case going forward, as reported by KCRA.
