Hanaway says police consolidation could ease St. Louis region staffing shortages

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – As St. Louis City marks one year of its police department moving back under state control, hiring challenges remain at SLMPD and across the region.

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said consolidating some police departments could help put more officers on patrol.

“We have too many people in leadership and not enough on patrol,” Hanaway said. “There are 54 police chiefs in St. Louis County. I don’t know what the right number is, but it’s way smaller than that.”…
