PuffPies (6915 Gravois), the new South City shop specializing in Chilean-style empanadas, didn’t need a grand opening to make an impression. Despite a quiet debut on July 19, the family-owned shop sold out on its first day. Here’s what to know before you go.
The Menu
Unlike empanadas from other countries where masa reigns as the wrap, Chilean empanadas owe their style in part to the Spanish conquistadors who brought wheat and beef to Chile. The empanadas contain a range of fillings, from traditional to pizza-inspired:
- Pino: The traditional empanada includes shredded beef, caramelized onions, black olives, sweet raisins, and pieces of hard-boiled eggs. (Pair it with the spicy garlic or Pebre sauces.)
- Pepperoni Pizza: A favorite for youth and adults alike, the full flavored empanada requires no additional sauces, though consider dipping it in sour cream.
- Breakfast Options: Choose from two styles: bacon and cheese, or ham and cheese. During busy mornings, it’s an ideal grab-and-go solution.
- Baked Chicken: Shredded chicken is mixed with bacon bits and cheese, which melts into the pastry. A dip in the tangerine spicy garlic sauce adds another savory element.
- Spinach Artichoke: Vegetarians might opt for this empanada, with cream cheese, artichoke, and spinach mix.
- Buffalo Chicken: The heat increases as you eat it, but the garlic sauce cuts it and adds flavor.
Expect a rotating lineup of limited-time empanadas as well once the team settles into its routine.
For dessert, don’t pass up the Basque cheesecake, the caramelized Spanish dessert that’s become a global favorite. It’s available in the classic or chocolate bueno rendition. (It’s big enough for two, but you may want your own.)…
