On May 11, 2026, St. Louis Magazine hosted the first St. Louis Supper Club of the year. The secret location: Basso on the Plaza. SLM dining editors George Mahe and Cheryl Baehr carefully selected this location after the debut of Basso on the Plaza in Westport last year, which quickly became one of 2025’s standout restaurant openings. Earning both popular and critical acclaim, the restaurant has drawn attention for its menu of wood-fired steaks and seafood, Neapolitan pizzas, housemade pastas, and sweeping views of Westport Plaza’s greenspace. The opening built on the success of the original Basso, the Italian-leaning rathskeller pub at The Cheshire that has cultivated a loyal following since 2013.

With over 22 years of culinary expertise, Executive Chef Daniel Sammons has established himself as a prominent figure in the culinary world. His journey began in the vibrant food scene of San Francisco, where he honed his skills and developed a passion for innovative cuisine. Eleven years ago, Daniel returned to his hometown of St. Louis, where he has since led some of the city’s most notable dining establishments. In St. Louis, Daniel took the helm at Basso at The Cheshire and the renowned 360 Rooftop Bar, where he showcased his ability to blend creativity with culinary excellence. His leadership and vision were instrumental in elevating these venues to new heights, earning them acclaim for their exceptional food and dining experiences. As the Corporate Executive Chef for Be Polite Hospitality, Daniel oversaw multiple kitchens, including Bellwether, Polite Society, Intergalactic Burger, Sub Division, and Well Met. In this role, he ensured that each establishment maintained high standards of food quality and creativity, consistently delivering memorable dining experiences to patrons. Recently, Daniel returned to Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM) to lead the new Basso at Westport Plaza. Here, he brings his extensive experience and passion for culinary innovation to this exciting venture, continuing his commitment to quality and excellence.
