Stormy days ahead in Minnesota, including ‘potentially significant severe weather’

“A concentrated area of potentially significant severe weather is expected Wednesday afternoon and evening, centered across portions of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.”

Those are the words from NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, which has elevated the threat for severe weather from a level 2 of 5 slight risk to a level 3 of 5 enhanced risk over the Twin Cities, Rochester, and western/central Wisconsin on Wednesday.

That’s significant because it’s still four days away. When the SPC starts putting enhanced risks in its Day 4 outlook, it usually means business.

According to the Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service, morning storms will likely clear out and set the stage for Wednesday afternoon temperatures in the mid-80s, with dew points in the mid-70s. That’s tropical moisture, which will help to create a “highly unstable atmosphere” ahead of an approaching cold front…
