Thirteen days after his heart stopped on a bicycle trail, Jon Toftoy sat in the sun Friday, Aug. 21, at a picnic table on the deck beside his Eden Prairie home. He looked fit in a Leadville Trail 100 T-shirt and colorful headband, but a LifeVest was strapped around his torso. Open-heart surgery was three days away.
His 6-year-old twin daughters, Alette and Freya, played nearby. Dr. Carter W. Muench, a friend of several years who had just returned from a walk with him, sat at the end of the table.
“I kind of like the sun,” Toftoy said. “I might be here only because I’ve been cooped up a little too much.”…
