“I like coming to visit because it feels like the world should be when we come here.” That’s what a family member told me recently when they came to visit us at our home in Northern Wisconsin. They have lived in Minneapolis for most of their life, and they say it’s gotten to the point that they are trying to figure out how to leave without taking a huge financial loss on their home. According to them, in the last few years it’s been getting worse.
‘Once A Quiet, Peaceful Neighborhood’
Their neighborhood in South Minneapolis was once a thriving and wonderful neighborhood. Now it’s riddled with crime, and those responsible aren’t being held accountable. There is no law and order, and when crime does happen, they say it’s a guessing game whether the police will even show up.
In the last 5 years, they’ve had a vehicle break-in, a garage break-in, experienced an attempted carjacking, and most recently had their vehicle stolen. Juveniles and teens are primarily the ones committing these crimes, which is heartbreaking.
Car Windows Smashed – Again
I saw a news story yesterday from KSTP about how the recent window-smashing suspects won’t be facing charges because of a new Minnesota law.
In case you missed it, over 200 vehicles had windows smashed in Minneapolis this week. Three individuals were arrested, aged 11, 12, and 16. Seriously, 11- and 12-year-olds are going around smashing windows?
Back in April, over 30 vehicles in the same area had their windows smashed.
New Law States Children Under 13 Can’t Be Prosecuted
The new law took effect on August 1, 2026. It states that no matter how serious or violent the crime, if the juvenile is under the age of 13, they cannot be charged, prosecuted, or sent to juvenile detention.
