Experts warn pet owners of signs of heatstroke after dog’s death in Tampa

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) —The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man after his Cane Corso died because of heatstroke. Experts say the high temperatures can have severe effects on animals and are reminding people to take precautions and look after their furry friends.

“At the hospital, we see 10 or more cases a week, probably, of just pets coming in that are overheated or exhibiting some of the signs of distress,” said Nash McCutchen, director of marketing for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

With temperatures above triple digits, experts say pet owners need to be extra careful during the summer months with all pets, especially those with breathing difficulties.

“What you can notice is drooling, weakness, they can tremble, they can collapse, their gum color can change, so it can get dark. It is an emergency if you start noticing the signs in a dog that’s been outside,” said Veterinarian Dr. Carina Vitullo…
