Pinellas County Detectives Probe Death Of 28-Year-Old Federal Inmate

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Detectives with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Robbery & Homicide Unit are investigating the death of Robert Sunmonu, a 28-year-old inmate who died Friday afternoon at the county jail.

Sunmonu had been held at the Pinellas County Jail since May 13, 2026, under a Federal Marshal Hold. According to investigators, Sunmonu had documented preexisting medical conditions prior to the incident.

The situation unfolded on July 3, 2026, at approximately 11:30 a.m., when jail staff discovered Sunmonu unresponsive inside his cell. On-duty deputies and facility medical staff immediately initiated life-saving measures and continued resuscitation efforts until local paramedics arrived at the scene. Despite these efforts, Sunmonu was pronounced deceased at 12:37 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that detectives have found no evidence indicating that Sunmonu sustained any physical injuries during his incarceration that could have contributed to his death. Officials noted that the death does not currently appear suspicious in nature…
