An early morning call in a quiet Lutz, Florida, neighborhood came perilously close to turning into a deadly law enforcement encounter after three teenagers allegedly aimed realistic-looking BB guns at a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office helicopter.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and local media reports, deputies responded at about 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, to the area near East 148th Avenue after a caller reported seeing three individuals walking through the neighborhood carrying what appeared to be rifles. Before ground units reached the location, the agency’s Aviation Unit arrived overhead and located the group from the air.
Investigators said the situation escalated when the three individuals turned the apparent rifles toward the helicopter. From the perspective of the flight crew, there was no practical way to determine whether the weapons were genuine firearms or replicas. The suspects then entered a nearby residence while deputies surrounded the property and ordered them to come outside. They eventually surrendered without further confrontation…
