Tampa is set to open a renovated 60-bed emergency shelter dedicated to veterans experiencing homelessness, creating a new local landing spot for people who need more than a temporary roof. The Hillsborough CARE Center is scheduled to begin operations Tuesday after an extensive overhaul of an existing campus. It is designed to pair emergency shelter with services aimed at helping residents move toward permanent housing.
According to Tampa Free Press, Hillsborough County partnered with St. Vincent de Paul CARES to establish the center and invested $4.4 million in property improvements through the State Housing Initiatives Partnership program. A public ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday. The nonprofit will manage day-to-day operations.
St. Vincent de Paul CARES says its broader housing work is built around rapid rehousing, stabilization support and a goal of making homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring. The organization operates programs across Florida and works with people facing barriers that can include mental health challenges, addiction, employment history and credit problems, according to its official overview.
